Kontra Coffee - a vibrant coffee house in Østerbro
Location
With the huge number of disposable cups thrown away annually, it was a natural choice to only offer New Loops recycled cups when the coffee house opened in 2024.
Listen to what the customer says
“We need to make it easy for our customers to drink coffee in a more sustainable way - and it's not just the coffee in the cup that matters. “

The solution
Good coffee deserves a good cup
At Kontra Coffee, it's not just about flavour, roasting and craftsmanship. It's also about responsibility. Because when you're passionate about quality in the cup, it makes sense to think about the cup itself. Since the start of our collaboration in 2024, Kontra Coffee has chosen reusable over disposable packaging. Instead of serving their coffee in traditional to-go disposable cups, they offer their guests a better alternative: reusable cups that are part of a circular system.
From attitude to action
When Kontra Coffee opened in 2024, they made a clear decision: the disposable cup would not be part of their coffee house. With the huge amount of waste generated from takeaway coffee every year, they chose from the start to only offer reusable cups through our deposit system.
According to Kontra Coffee, the transition to recycling has gone beyond all expectations; customers don't complain - on the contrary, they show great understanding and respect for the decision. Many respond with the same reaction: “It makes sense.” When the attitude is clear and the solution is simple, the support follows. With the return boxes placed around the city, the system is easy to use. The cup is handed in, the deposit is paid and it is sent back into circulation.
The collaboration has also been development-orientated. Kontra Coffee has contributed with experience and feedback on both the cups and the return system, which has strengthened the solution along the way. Today, the reusable cup is fully integrated into their entire business - and is even included in customer collaborations where Kontra supplies the coffee and we supply the cups as part of the overall solution.
A common infrastructure for recycling
The return system is an open deposit system for reusable cups. When a customer buys coffee, a deposit is paid for the cup. After use, the cup can be returned to one of our return boxes located around the city - and the deposit is paid out immediately.
Kontra Coffee has been a partner in the scheme for some time and the recycling system is now an integral part of their daily operations. For staff, it's simple. For customers, it's intuitive. And for the city, it's a concrete step towards less disposable consumption and more circularity in public spaces.
By bringing cafés together in one return system, we create scale and impact. The more people participate, the stronger the cycle becomes - and the fewer disposable cups end up as waste.
