Copenhagen Sprint drew thousands of spectators to the streets of Copenhagen for a weekend of international cycling. To reduce the event’s environmental footprint, nearly 15,000 single-use containers were replaced by reusable ones through a deposit-and-return scheme involving reverse vending machines located across the city.

The solution
A circular cycle race
Major events bring large numbers of people together – and generate huge amounts of waste. At Copenhagen Sprint, 14.770 Reusable cups and food packaging were put into circulation through New Loops’ open deposit system, replacing traditional single-use packaging. By linking the event to Copenhagen’s existing network of reverse vending machines, it was easy for the public to return the packaging and keep resources in circulation – even after the race had finished.
Back among the spectators
To make recycling easy and accessible, additional reverse vending machines were installed at Østre Anlæg, Nørrebros Runddel and Søtorvet. Combined with Copenhagen’s existing recycling infrastructure, these additional recycling machines made it easy for the public to return cups and food packaging close to the event’s busiest areas.
A common infrastructure for recycling
The return scheme is an open deposit system for reusable cups. When you buy a coffee or other drink, you pay a deposit for the cup. After use, the cup can be returned to one of our return boxes, which are located around the city – and the deposit is refunded immediately.
How does it work?
How to get your deposit back
Step 1.
SCAN THE QR CODE ON THE CUP
The first time you use the system, scan the unique QR code on the used packaging with your device and register your account details to receive the deposit transfer.
Step 2.
Scan the qr code on Returnbox
Then scan the QR code on the return container and follow the instructions in the web app throughout the process.
Step 3.
Scan your used packaging
Scan all the packaging you want to return and see an overview of how much deposit you get back.
Step 4.
Return the packaging in the Returnbox
Drop off the scanned packaging in the Returnbox and press finish in the web app. The deposit is automatically paid to the linked card.
